5 Reasons to choose Telegram over WhatsApp

Hello friends...we have all loved and cherished a lot of moments using our favorite messaging client, WhatsApp. But, things have changed lately … especially after the Social Networking Giant Facebook purchased WhatsApp for $19 billion. Yeah… That’s a hell lot of money for a messaging client. But actually Facebook had to pay so much to counter its rival Google Corp. which was planning to buy WhatsApp for $10 billion. Company matters…fine, but how does it affect us?

After the Edward Snowden disclosure (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki//Edward_Snowden), we are obviously not in a position to trust even the most secure servers in the world. Gmail, Facebook, Yahoo, MSN, all came exposed under one roof and were alleged for providing confidential data of users to NSA programs. And now, since WhatsApp is acquired by Facebook, I would burn myself alive rather than trusting WhatsApp for keeping my chat logs secure. Telegram comes to the rescue, read on to find out the five big reasons why you should switch to Telegram…

1. Security:       Telegram is more secure than WhatsApp and Line. It uses MTProto protocol and certain other algorithms to make it highly secure, fast and reliable. Also, being open source, you can yourself verify its code to check if it is stealing any personal information from you. If you are a Security Freak, you can use the secret chat feature, which uses end-to-end message transfer without cloud storage. Additionally, you can set a self-destruct timer to destroy messages automatically.

2. Price:
Free. Telegram developers Pavel and Nicolai Durov believe in fast and secure messaging that is 100% free. Commercial companies many-a-times face the need to compromise their values for financial gain. Telegram is not intended to make money, it is free and will always be free.

3. Open Source:      WhatsApp was founded in the year 2009 while Telegram during 2013. How do you think it managed to evolve so fast so as to emerge as a winner??? Duh…Its open source. Millions of developers can voluntarily contribute in its development and are doing so, helping Telegram become the best messaging client.

4. Features:

a)    User Interface: The user interface of Telegram is exactly similar to WhatsApp…so, users familiar with WhatsApp will feel right at home. Plus, it’s background has got some cute kittens and puppies as well :p

 b) Group Limit: Group limit for a WhatsApp group is 50. My own class has more than 70 students. How they all are supposed to fit? Thankfully, Telegram supports upto 100 users in a group. Guess all Dalmatians will fit, except one.

 c)  Media: WhatsApp supports only images and videos sharing, and the maximum file size limit is 12 Mb. Also, when sharing, it significantly compresses the images leading to degradation in quality. Telegram allows single file upload size upto 1 Gb and supports any file format upload (i.e. jpg, mpg, mp3, pdf, asm, cpp, zip, rar etc…)

d)  Status: How many among us spend a considerate amount of time every week thinking about our new WhatsApp status? Although we think a cool status will increase our repo…or something more stupid than this, it’s actually…A TIMEKILLER!!! Worry no more… Telegram developers have banned your privilege to set a status, thereby saving a lot of your time.

e) Notifications: A noteworthy feature of Telegram is that you can set different notification sound for each individual user or group. Imagine keeping a “Siren” as notification sound if message comes from parents, pretty handy…eh!

    5.  Fast:
The app download page says itself, “superfast”. Even the logo is of a paper rocket. No more comments on this, you will have to feel it so as to know it.

In a Nutshell...

The day after Facebook purchased WhatsApp, Many WhatsApp users started flocking to Telegram by hundreds…thousands in numbers. Following tweet by Telegram’s official Twitter account sums it up all:

@FernandoMiguel Sorry, our SMS gateways are overloaded. 4 Million New users within 36 hours was hard to predict.

The toughest part is to convince all your friends to switch from WhatsApp to Telegram, but the latter phase is bountiful. Millions have happily joined and have become a part of the Telegram family. Come…join us and communicate in a Safe, Secure and Simplistic Environment.
